The Birth of the Digital Age

The 1970s were a decade of amazing discoveries and advances in technology in part due to space race of the previous decade. On top of this the computer was moving away from the room size behemoth that had dominated the world for many years and becoming miniaturized to the point where the first digital watches started to hit the market. The first ones featured a red LED readout and were extremely expensive.

Very few people could afford these first watches and showed only the time and in a few rare cases the date. In order to see the correct time one had to push a button on the watch. These watches no longer had to be wound as they used a battery to power them and an electronic crystal to keep the time. These new watches were far more accurate than many of the best watches that were being made at the time.

Moving On

30 years later digital watches are no longer just for those wealthy few that can afford to buy them, cheap digital watches abound and can be found as give away items in boxes of cereal or as promotional items that are given away by the handfuls at various events.
